In 2001, the Institute of Medicine (IOM) released the report Calling the Shots, which recommended that the Nation's immunization system needed to be revitalized to maintain strength and prevent future disease outbreaks. On March 18, 2002, a national workshop was held to examine the implications of the findings and recommendations of that report.
