Biomedical Science & Policy Discussion Series

The Institute of Medicine's Forum on Drug Discovery, Development, and Translation presented the second in a new series of public discussions on issues in drug-related science and policy on November 30.

This discussion, featuring Anthony S. Fauci, M.D., Director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, explored the challenges and opportunities in the global fight against disease, and NIAID’s critical role in this enterprise, providing an opportunity for policy makers to learn from the country’s leading scientists about critical issues in biomedical science and drug development.  The discussion used an informal interview format to probe a range of issues that are determined in advance, interspersed with questions from the audience, which included members of the Forum, the health policy community, Congressional staffers, and members of the public. Topics included the changing nature of biomedical research in the genomic age, challenges and prospects for therapeutic breakthroughs in the future, the unique role of NIH in basic and translational research, the growing problem of drug resistance, and the global problems of drug resistant TB and HIV/AIDS.

This event was open to the public, and was also audiocast live over the internet for those who were unable to attend in person.  Audiocast listeners were able to ask questions via email in real time.  A recording of the discussion will also be available on our website following the event.
