Workshop
"Development of DRIs, 1994-2004: Lessons Learned and New Challenges"
Washington, DC
September 18-20, 2007
Background
The Dietary Reference Intakes developed between 1994 and 2004 represented a new approach to nutrient reference standards. This workshop was an open public meeting and offered an opportunity to discuss the lessons learned from the DRI development process and to identify issues to be considered in enhancing the approach. The discussions were not intended to provide consensus recommendations on issues, but rather were focused on allowing a range of stakeholder input.
The workshop was jointly sponsored by the US Department of Health and Human Services, US Department of Agriculture, the Canadian Institutes for Health Research, and Health Canada.
Workshop Summary
The workshop summary report can be found at the National Academies Press. Slides used by the workshop presenters during the workshop, as well as audio clips from each presentation/discussion, can be accessed: Click here.
Related Document: Background Paper on DRI Framework
Following the DRI workshop, Health Canada (in collaboration with representatives of the US DRI Federal Steering Committee) funded a background paper intended to outline the general components known as well as the components to be explored regarding the development of DRIs. The paper, which draws heavily on the workshop discussions, can be accessed. Click here (pdf).
