At the request of the President and CEO of the State of the USA, an IOM consensus committee will be convened to provide guidance on potential health indicators.   A brief letter report will be developed with the committee's recommendation to SUSA about the topic areas and indicators that should be included in the health /health care domain of the SUSA website. 

In conducting its work, the committee should give consideration to:

1. The availability of high quality of data at the national level to accurately reflect the indicator construct
     a. availability of data that can be broken down by important population subgroups (e.g. age, gender,
     SES, race/ethnicity) and geography (states, cities, communities)
2. Reliability and quality of data and data sources
3. Issues that are most salient for intended audience and users of SUSA
4. Indicators that are sensitive to changes in other societal domains (socioeconomic or environmental
    conditions or public policies)
5.  Indicators that permit cross-country comparisons

To the degree possible, the indicators selected should be those that best reflect: (1) the overall health of the nation and factors that are important in determining the current and future health of the nation and (2) the effectiveness and efficiency of the US health care and public health systems.
