Medical Follow-Up Agency Background Print   Email

The Medical Follow-up Agency conducts epidemiological studies of the military veteran population. MFUA has staff located in a main office and two satellite offices. In the satellite offices are records experts with special knowledge of military records: the VA records staff is in the Washington VA Regional Office and the military records staff is in St. Louis, at the National Personnel Records Center. In addition, expert volunteers and sometimes collaborators from other research organizations work with staff at various stages in the study process. MFUA studies result in Academy-reviewed reports and in peer-reviewed journal publications.

Priority Areas

MFUA has identified two major priorities:

  • Refine MFUA's catalog of veteran cohorts with service-related disease conditions or putative exposures, and explore new ways of distributing the catalog to epidemiologists interested in collaborative research; and
  • Develop studies of military deployment health.
