Psychosocial Services to Cancer Patients and Families in a Community Setting

More Information Print   Email

An expert IOM committee will examine psychosocial services to patients and families in a community setting by:

  1. Reviewing previous IOM and selected report recommendations and determining what recommendations have been implemented. Meeting the Psychosocial Needs of Women with Breast Cancer, Childhood Cancer Survivorship: Improving Care and Quality of Life, and Crossing the Quality Chasm: A New Health System for the 21st Century, are among the IOM reports that the committee will review.
  2. Determining why many recommendations have not been implemented and identify ways to reduce barriers to psychosocial care.
  3. Documenting types of services provided, availability, volume of use, who is using services, how they are accessed, what they are told/given as condition evolves (flow of care), provider capacity, how they are paid for.
  4. Developing recommendations about reimbursement for psychosocial care.
  5. Developing recommendations on psychosocial service delivery, workforce and training.
  6. Identifying gaps in knowledge and developing an applied clinical research agenda.
  7. Identifying and characterizing diverse and successful models of psychosocial care for patients and families and identifying successful, replicable, demonstration models of effective, accessible psychosocial service delivery in communities; and
  8. Developing an action plan addressing various stakeholders and suggestions for expanding demonstration models.
