At the request of the Senate Committee on Appropriations, the Institute of Medicine established a committee to examine the roles and responsibilities of state and federal governments in supporting immunization services and to identify basic strategies that could strengthen the national immunization system in the current health care climate.

The report offers an in depth view of the financial state of the U.S. immunization system, focusing primarily on infrastructure issues and interactions among public and private health plans. The report also includes recommendations with respect to federal and state funding, public purchases of adult vaccines, and measures to assess performance in the public and private sector.

Setting the Course: A Strategic Vision for Immunization, Part 3: Summary of the Los Angeles Workshop In January 2002, health officials, public health experts, health care providers, health plan representatives, health care purchasers, and community leaders met at the University of California at Los Angeles to discuss state-specific challenges for immunization finance and future strategies for strengthening immunization activities and the public health infrastructure that supports those activities. This report summarizes the discussions of the workshop, which examined immunization issues in California, with a special focus on Los Angeles and San Diego counties.
