Meeting 8: Strategic Planning and Goal Setting, Phase 2

When:
Monday, November 16, 2009 (9:00 AM)
Where:
House of Sweden (Alfred Nobel Hall, 2nd floor) • 2900 K Street NW, Washington, DC 20007 Map

Topic(s):
Biomedical and Health Research, Public Health
Activity:
Roundtable on Translating Genomic-Based Research for Health
Board(s):
Board on Health Sciences Policy

This meeting is a continuation of the June 10-11, 2009 meeting in which Roundtable members discussed and developed a strategic plan for the future activities of the Roundtable.  The plan is based on the following assumptions:

  1. Health-related research and research funding are driven by important health questions.
  2. Research spans the translational pathway.
  3. Because there is a lack of evidence concerning the clinical utility of genomic health care applications and their optimal delivery, addressing these evidence gaps is an important priority.
  4. Clinical utility has multiple components.

In addition, the Roundtable has set two goals for near-term work.  Through the use of workshops, seminars, or commissioned papers, the Roundtable will continue to:

  1. Discuss approaches to filling evidence gaps in the use of genetic diagnostics or the use of genomics in drug development, and
  2. Explore measures, including further research, to improve or facilitate implementation of genomic health applications that could improve health outcomes.
